The application for obtaining Moldova’s nationality can no longer be submitted by a proxy. A bill to amend the Law on the Nationality was proposed for public consultations by the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, IPN reports.

In a communique, the Ministry says that an essential increase in the number of applicants for nationality, but also of attempts to obtain nationality by illegal ways has been witnessed lately.

Currently, the application for gaining or regaining the nationality of Moldova is addressed to the President of Moldova and is submitted personally or by a proxy, the latter having a power of attorney authenticated by the notary, to the nearest local office of the Ministry. In the case of a person who legally lives abroad, the application is filed to Moldova’s embassies or to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European integration.

According to the author of the bill, the authentication of the power of authority in foreign countries cannot be verified. This reduces the efficiency of the process of examining the presented documents. The elimination of the possibility of regaining nationality based on the power of attorney will represent an opportunity for eliminating the cases when nationality is obtained illegally and will contribute to strengthening Moldova’s security in the eastern neighborhood of the EU.

By another amendment to the mentioned law, it is proposed excluding the certificate showing non-holding of the previous nationality or the certificate about the renouncing of this nationality from the list of documents needed for gaining or regaining the nationality.
