The national Under 21 football team of Moldova won the first victory at the CIS Cup held in Saint-Petersburg. Igor Ursachi’s team beat the national squad of Estonia 3-2 and will struggle with the team of Latvia for the ninth position, IPN reports.
Even if Moldova opened the score in the 1st minute through Ion Lacusta, Estonia recovered quickly and scored two goals shortly afterward. The ‘tricolors’ managed to tie towards the end of the first half through Andrei Ciofu, from a penalty kick, while Ion Ursu brought the victory in the 63rd minute. Moldova could have scored again, but captain Dan Spataru missed an 11-meter kick.
“We lost no game at this tournament, but compete only for the ninth place regretfully,” Moldova Under 21 coach Igor Ursachi told a news conference. In the match for the ninth position, Moldova meets Latvia, with which it drew in the group phase. Moldova also drew with Kirgizstan and Russia.
