The National Library of the Republic of Moldova has launched a special program of activities entitled “Reading unites us”. The activities are aimed at socially including disadvantaged person through reading and at facilitating communication between family members through a special distance reading program, the Library’s director Elena Pintilei has told IPN.

“It is a National Library initiative by which we cooperate with libraries or educational institutions of national penitentiaries. Such renowned writers as Iulian Filip and Aurelian Silvestru provide their books so as to offer fathers who are in detention the opportunity to read a story to their children. Respectively, this story read by parents is brought home by librarians in a video format and the child listens to the father and receives that small joy and satisfaction of seeing the father closer to the family,” stated.

As part of the initiative
“Reading unites us”, the children are also offered the possibility of reading to their parents who are in jail. The filmed messages will be transmitted to jails through the agency of libraries. There will be held book launches and donations of books for penitentiary libraries.

“At the same time, we aim to develop partnerships between local public libraries and
penitentiary libraries as a means of self-education of socially disadvantaged persons, which will amplify the social impact of the activity of libraries. For the purpose, there were signed 11 agreements of cooperation between the National Administration of Penitentiaries and the National Library of the Republic of Moldova and other national libraries,” stated Elena Pintilei, noting that this cooperation is designed to ensure better communication between children and parents who are in detention and to improve the moral-physiological state of those who are behind bars.

The initiative
“Reading unites us” is held as part of the National Program “LecturaCentral”, the fifth edition, which is implemented by the National Library and the League of Librarians of the Republic of Moldova.
