The democratic forces in Moldova should be unified so as they are able to win the 2009 parliamentary elections. This conclusion was formulated at the meeting of the National Political Delegation of the National Liberal Party (PNL), which discussed the mission given to a group of people - party leaders - empowered to conduct negotiations over a future merger with other political organisations and democratic forces.
“I think that the democratic parties of Moldova have not learned the lesson of 2001 and that of 2005 either. Therefore certain wounds are too deep. We should treat our wounds quickly and not forget the sins, but we should forget the mistakes so as to be able to go along and overthrow the communists,” said Valerian Dorogan, one of the oldest members of the PNL.
The National Political Delegation also discussed the results of the recent local elections. According to the meeting participants, the PNL had to take part in these elections, through it was officially constituted in February 2007. The party achieved the following results: five mayors, one municipal councillor, four district councillors, 20 town councillors and 38 village councillors. The democratic parties should join also because the voters are bewildered at the existence of a number of parties of the same orientation and want that the right-wing parties form a union, fact ascertained during the election campaign.
The PNL president Vitalia Pavlicenco considers that Dorin Chirtoaca’s victory is the result of the efforts of all the democratic parties which, for al least two years, have urged the population and explained why they should not vote for the Communist Party. She expressed her concerns over possible political developments and early elections, about which it was widely rumoured lately, and pleaded for the unification of the liberal parties with a view to efficiently participating in the next elections.
