Landscapes in bright colors, immortalized on canvas, can be admired at an exhibition of the Latvian painter Valdis Bušs, which was mounted at the National Art Museum of Moldova. The exhibition, which marks the 100th anniversary of the artist’s birth, represents a significant moment for cultural cooperation between Latvia and Moldova, Latvian Ambassador to the Republic of Moldova Edgars Bondars said at the inaugural ceremony that was organized in partnership with the Embassy of the Republic of Latvia in the Republic of Moldova and the Jūrmala City Museum, IPN reports.
The Ambassador of Latvia in Chisinau Edgars Bondars said that this exhibition is a particularly important event for the bilateral cooperation between Latvia and Moldova in the field of culture, expressing the firm conviction that this is just the beginning. According to the diplomat, the works are very bright and white predominates in the artist’s works. The ambassador expressed his confidence that the exhibition will be a great success in Chisinau.
National Art Museum director Tudor Zbarnea said that Valdis Bušs is an artist that he immediately accepted to welcome in Chisinau because he noticed in his paintings an exceptional inner light that is reflected in the paintings exhibited at the Museum. “He is an artist who fully represents Latvian painting, but, at the same time, he departs from what we know was done in Latvia, especially in the second half of the 20th century, where the chromatic condition was more severe, maintained in a more calculated way, and Valdis Bušs is a free, unfettered artist, who does not intend to copy nature, but interprets it,” said the director.
Minister of Culture of the Republic of Moldova Sergiu Prodan stressed the importance of creating as close ties as possible with the European Union and its member countries in the current context. The Baltic countries, especially Latvia, have many aspects in common with Moldova, but also numerous differences, including in history. This exhibition gives us the opportunity to admire a distinct history of the painter’s life, to go through the stages he went through and to compare them with our own experiences, thus helping us to get to know each other and get closer and closer.
The exhibition’s curator Inga Bunkše said that for 50 years, Valdis Bušs has been an integral part of Latvian art and culture. His first exhibition was mounted at the age of 46, when he worked intensely to convey important messages through his works, making 4-5 sketches a day. He used the technique of oil painting, seeking to capture the atmosphere of the moment in which he was working. His colors are inspired by nature. Inga Bunkše noted that the artist left behind about 4,000 unique works. Although he mainly painted landscapes, at the age of 80 he worked in a more abstract manner, deeply influenced by philosophy. The exhibited paintings were borrowed from the Jūrmala City Museum and the personal collection of Valdis Bušs’ son.
