An anti-European government in Chisinau can lead to the blocking of European funds intended for the Republic of Moldova, Romanian MEP Siegfried Mureșan stated in the talk show "Resumé” on RliveTV channel. The MEP stressed that it is essential for the European Union to have a pro-European majority in the legislature in Chisinau after this autumn’s parliamentary elections, which would support the formation of a pro-European government, IPN reports.

Siegfried Mureșan said that out of the total of €1.9 billion offered by the EU to the Republic of Moldova, €385 million is provided in the form of grants, and the rest of the amount consists of loans released under extremely advantageous conditions.

"Out of the total of €1.9 billion, over €385 million will represent non-reimbursable funds, which is the money should not be returned to the European Commission. They are for the Republic of Moldova. The rest are indeed loans, offered on very advantageous terms. They must be repaid only after 2034," said the head of the EU-Republic of Moldova Delegation in the European Parliament.

The official said that the first tranche will arrive in Chisinau at the end of April so that infrastructure projects could be started. "The first payment will be made before the end of April. There will be offered €315 million in pre-financing so that the projects planned by the Government, such as building of hospital and renovation of schools, can begin."

The MEP explained that if there is an anti-European government in Chisinau, the European Union could block funds for Moldova.

"If, after the parliamentary elections of this autumn, year, we continue to see a clean, pro-European government, if there is a pro-European majority in Parliament, I am convinced that the negotiations will go quickly. If there is an anti-European government, the European funds will probably be blocked," said Siegfried Mureșan.
