PAS MP Sergiu Litvinenco said businessman Veaceslav Platon was allowed to freely leave the Republic of Moldova even if he is investigated in a number of criminal cases and he should have been banned from leaving the country. In this connection, the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) said the normal conduct of procedures pending at the Buiucani branch of the Chisinau City Court is in the interests of citizen Platon too and they do not see why Platon should shrink from doing what is right, IPN reports.
“I don’t know what explanations the prosecutor general will find this time, but I’m absolutely sure that something like this couldn’t have been done without his consent. The persons who allow internationally notorious criminals to unrestrictedly run away a priori cannot reform the justice sector and fight corruption, which is they cannot do justice as the people of the Republic of Moldova asked in the July 11, 2021 elections,” stated Sergiu Litvinenco.
The PGO noted there is now no pending procedure that would require taking a preventive measure in relation to citizen Platon. A decision will be taken later depending on Platon’s conduct during the ongoing procedures.
“We note that under the law, only the prosecutor in charge of the case has the discretionary right to decide whether to take preventive measures against persons featured in the handled cases or not,” the PGO noted in a press release.
The institution denied the assertions of MP Sergiu Litvinenco, who accuses the prosecutor general of “consenting” to the leaving of citizen Platon, and recommended him to avoid making such unfounded accusations.
Veaceslav Platon was acquitted in the bank fraud case in which he was earlier sentenced to 18 years in jail. The Prosecutor General’s Office initiated the revision of his case and the prosecutors on May 28 this year dropped the charges against the businessman.
