The Movement for supporting “Basescu’s initiative” on Moldova’s integration together with Romania in the European Union plans to organize in Chisinau, on October 29, the Republican Assembly of Citizens for requesting the unification of R. of Moldova with Romania. The chairman of the Unionist Movement of Moldova (UMM), Ilie Bratu, who is member of the movement for supporting “Basescu’s initiative”, told Info-Prim Neo that at the Assembly the question of unification of the Republic of Moldova and Romania till December 31 will be discussed, so that Moldova could enter the EU at a time with Romania’s adherence on January 1, 2007. Bratu declared that, for more than 2 weeks, a request was submitted to the mayoralty for an authorization of the action. At present, the members of the movement display in the territory activities of preparation of the population, of spreading appeals. The cited source hopes that the assembly will include from 80,000 to 100,000 persons. On the other hand, Andrei Vartic, member of the Directing Council of the Democratic Forum of Romanians from Moldova, asserts that such an important action “cannot be done in a day or two”, requiring imposing human and financial resources. At the same time, the head of the Social-Humanitarian and Interethnic Relations Department, Nina Stratulat, affirms that such a request was not submitted to the subdivision she is responsible of, supposing though that it could be “at the leadership of the Mayoralty”. The Movement for supporting” Basescu’s Initiative” was created in July, shortly after the Romanian President, Traian Basescu declared that Romania offered the R. of Moldova the chance to enter the EU together with his country. On the other hand, Moldovan President, Vladimir Voronin declared that the unification of R. of Moldova with Romania is impossible even after its adherence to the EU, and “the architects of this scenarios, both those from Tiraspol and those from Bucharest should admit the idea that such dreams are unrealizable”. Three political parties adhered to the Movement for supporting “Basescu’s initiatve” – UMM, the Social Liberal Party and the National Romanian Party, as well as a range of NGOs.
