The Movement for supporting “Basescu Initiative”- integration of Moldova together with Romania in the European Union plans to organize on October 29 in Chisinau, the Great National Assembly (GNA) in order to request unification of the Republic of Moldova with Romania. According to the head of the Unionist Movement from Moldova (MUM), Ile Bratu, member of the Movement for supporting “Basescu Initiative”, a single issue will be discussed at GNA – unification of Moldova with Romania until December 31, 2006, so that Moldova would join the EU together with Romania on January 1, 2007. Bratu said that if intensely working in all the country, at least 500 thousand persons, even one million could attend the Assembly. “It is impossible to gather more persons in nowadays situation, in light of massive migration”. According to the cited source, 700-800 thousand signatures will be collected in favor of this idea. The organizers say that this mass of people will be able to determine any leadership to lend their year to the will of the people. As well, the Movement will propose to summon an extraordinary Parliamentary meeting the same day, where the unification of Moldova with Romania will be decided. The Movement for supporting “Basescu Initiative” was created in July 2006, short after President of Romania Traian Basescu offered to Moldova the chance to join the EU. On the other hand, President of the Republic of Moldova, Vladimir Voronin declared that the unification of Moldova and Romania will not happen even after Romania’s adhering to EU and that “the architects of such scenarios from Tiraspol and Bucharest must accept that these dreams are unachievable.” 3 political parties adhered to the Movement for supporting “Basescu Initiative” – MUM, Social Liberal Party and the National Romanian Party, as well as a series of NGOs.
