The gym of the school of Proteagailovca village, situated on the left bank of the Nistru River, has been refurbished for the first time in almost 60 years after it had opened its doors for the first time. The investments, in the amount of €134,000, were provided by the European Union in the framework of the “Support to Confidence Building Measures” Program, implemented by the UNDP. The old windows of Proteagailovca school have been already changed with new ones. The floor, plaster and all engineering networks are being changed. The locker room and sanitary facilities will also be repaired.

Europe Day will be celebrated in Moldova by a series of events that will be organized by the executive in the course of May. In this connection, Prime Minister Pavel Filip said on May 13 Europe Day will be marked alongside the EU partners in the central park of Chisinau, where there will be set up the traditional European Town. He called on all the state institutions to take part in the event.

The people’s trust in the justice sector of Moldova increased three times in the past six months. According to the Public Opinion Barometer, 24% of those polled this April said they have trust in justice, as opposed to 7.8% last October. As the Ministry of Justice said, the people’s trust in justice rose also owing to the implementation of the European Commission for the Efficiency of Justice Project in concert with the Moldovan judicial authorities. In this regard, it was recommended introducing such new instruments as the registers e-Execution, e-Notary, e-Arrest, e-Probation, e-Licenses, e-Organizations, e-Prosecution Service, e-File.

Teachers from both sides of the Nistru River during two years will be taught about the observance and promotion of human rights. The activities, launched on the initiative of the Institute for Democracy, will be supported financially by the European Union within the Support to Confidence Building Measures Program. There will be set up three centers for training about 300 teachers.

The Customs Service will simplify the customs procedures in the Giurgiulesti International Free Port so as to increase the efficiency of the complex’s commercial activity. The phytosanitary and veterinary procedures applied during clearance will also be improved. The EU Border Assistance Mission to Moldova and Ukraine (EUBAM) in a news conference presented the results of the study of customs procedures used at the Giurgiulesti International Free Port. Besides simplifying the clearance procedures, the study also recommends amending the legal and regulatory framework applying to the Port and modernizing infrastructure.

The draft law on the prevention and combating of money laundering and terrorism financing needs to be subject to a multilateral risk assessment, with the involvement of civil society experts and experts from the professional business sector. The measures defined in the bill, the risks associated with violations and the package of penalties should be appraised, considers economist of the Independent Analytical Center “Expert-Grup” Sergiu Gaibu, who analyzed the given legislative initiative. Sergiu Gaibu said that before being voted in the second reading, it is important for the bill on the prevention and combating of money laundering and terrorism financing to incorporate the best practices concerning the identification of final beneficiaries and determination of suspect transactions and precautionary measures in relation to clients. This can be ensured by fully transposing all the provisions of the EU directive.

Most of the Moldovans perceive the European Union as the main development partner of the Republic of Moldova, while German Chancellor Angela Merkel as the most influential person in the European area. At the same time, corruption, salaries, pensions and jobs are the main problems that worry the population, shows the survey “People Watch” carried out by the sociological investigations and marketing center CBS-AXA. The poll was commissioned by the Institute for Development and Social Initiative “Viitorul”. Some 52% of those polled said the EU helps the Republic of Moldova the most. This is followed by Romania with 23%, Russia with 17% and the U.S. with 12.1%. Almost two-thirds of those questioned said the financial resources should be used to develop the economy so that they bring the biggest benefit to the country and the people.

Tourists who were considering exploring the left bank of the Nistru River can make their trip more memorable. A Tourist Information Center, opened today, May 5, in Tiraspol, will recommend tourist destinations, accommodation possibilities, and other relevant information for foreign visitors or locals. This is one of the projects implemented within the framework of the EU-funded Support to Confidence Building Measures Program, implemented by the UNDP. The Center was created as a result of a cross-river cooperation platform established by the Agency for Regional Development from Tiraspol and the Association of Hotel and Restaurants of Moldova. The consultations about the touristic facilities are being provided both in Russian and English languages and are free of charge. The visitors can also pick up various brochures, guidebooks and buy unique souvenirs made by local craftsmen.
