The Moldovan political parties with pro-Eastern views are the most homophobe as they are inspired by the practice of Russia and the laws adopted by this state, which do not ensure the observance of human rights. In a news conference at IPN, Angela Frolov, program coordinator at the Information Center “Genderdoc-M”, said such a policy is aimed at distracting attention from economic and social problems so that the political leaders can complete their evil plans without being noticed by the largest part of the population.

“I think that only an impotent politician who does not know how to convince the voters and what to promise starts to show feelings of hatred towards different minorities of our society,” said Angela Frolov. She added that in the pre-electoral period, the number of trials on cases of hate and discrimination against members of the LGBT community increases. The Information Center “Genderdoc-M” took legal action over seven cases of discrimination that are now examined in court. Several other cases are being investigated.

Human rights expert Doina Ioana Straisteanu said 80% of all the disputes concerning the LGBT community examined in court are won by “Genderdoc-M”. The defendants are obliged to pay the court costs incurred by “Genderdoc-M”, plus non-pecuniary damages. Such public figures as the head of the public association “Moldova Mea” Fiodor Ghelici and former minister of security Anatol Plugaru paid court costs and non-pecuniary damages, but didn’t apologize publicly, even if the court decision provides this.

According to the data of “Genderdoc-M”, 12 hate crimes against gay men have been committed so far this year. The men were abused by members of an extremist group of Moldova. A serviceman and three civilians stood trial and are now servicing time in jail.
