The industrial production in Ungheni district in the first quarter of this year fell by 30% compared with the corresponding period last year, while the number of the unemployed continues to rise, the district’s vice president Ludmila Guzun told a news conference in Chisinau, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“The economic entities decreased production levels and the revenues to the local budget will thus drop by 25%. Retail sales in the first quarter of this year declined by 20% compared with the same period last year. This shows that the purchasing power of the population diminished significantly,” Ludmila Guzun said.
She also said that as production levels fall, the companies have to send the employees on forced leave. In Ungheni district, the number of those that take forced leave without indemnities amounts to over 3,000.
The jobless rate also increases. “Besides layoffs, many Moldovans return home from abroad as there is no more work for them. The number of jobless persons during the first three months of this year grew by 25% year on year,” Guzun said.
