The religious community of the Monastery of Nuns “Birth of the Mother of God” based in Taraclia town will be exempted from paying a compensatory tax for the losses caused by excluding a plot of 2 ha of land from agricultural circuit for building the monastery on it. A bill to this effect was passed by MPs in the first reading on June 30, IPN reports.

The informative note to the bill says the Taraclia Town Council in April 2012 transmitted 5 ha of farmland on which to erect the monastery to the religious community.  Based on the Council’s decision, the Taraclia mayor’s office transferred the land under the private ownership of the religious community.

Under the construction plan, the church and annexes will be built on a plot of 2 ha, while the other 3 ha will be cultivated by the nuns. Almost five years passed since these decisions were taken, but the construction works didn’t start.

Bill authors, Socialist MPs Radu Mudreac and Eduard Smirnov said the problem resides in the fact that a sum of 2 027 081 lei is to be paid to compensate for the losses caused by excluding the plot of 2 ha from agricultural circuit. Neither the religious community, not the residents of the town from whose donations the monastery is to be erected can pay such an amount.
