The level of water in the Prut River goes up, but there are no risks of floods, vice director of Moldova’s Water Agency Radu Cazacu assures. “The Prut is barraged. The localities and farmland are situated on the dried part of the dyke. Even if the level of water rises, it reaches the protection levees only,” he stated for IPN.

The water flow capacity is of 500 cubic meters per second. This does not pose risks of floods as the barrages on the Prut River are planned for 700 cubic meters per second. Radu Cazacu noted that if the river floods, the inundations will be insignificant. If the weather conditions do not change, there will be no rain in the Carpathian Mountains and the volume of floodwater remains the same, there are no dangers of floods along the Prut.

“This year we finished the repair works on the protection levees in Goteşti and Văleni, which were the most vulnerable places,” stated Radu Cazacu.

According to him, the situation on the Nistru is also within normality. The flow capacity there is of 900 cubic meters per second, while the barrages were projected for 2,800 cubic meters per second.

The State Hydrometeorological Service on June 17 issued a yellow code advisory for floods along the Prut River in connection with the rise in the volume of water that is to be discharged from the Costești-Stânca accumulation lake. The warning is valid until July 3.
