Moldova's foreign policy is entering a new, active phase. In the coming weeks, Chișinău will be visited by foreign ministers and heads of state - strategic partners - from the European area, said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, Nicu Popescu, at a press briefing jointly held with the Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs, who is on a working visit to Chișinău between August 16 and 18.

The official emphasized that from the perspective of accelerating the external factor, Chișinău is interested in continuing its cooperation with Latvia both directly and in the context of the European Union. Moldova's Association Agreement with the EU offers opportunities that need to be exploited and developed. "European integration is a key priority for our government. For us, this means strengthening relations, integrating into the European Union and transforming this nation into a state governed according to European norms and practices", said the head of Moldovan diplomacy.

During the briefing, Nicu Popescu talked about the aid provided by the Baltics during the pandemic, which included batches of vaccines and equipment, and about Moldova’s interest in public policies which seek to reform the judiciary, fight corruption and modernize the economy. "We want to deepen, intensify and broaden our integration with the European Union in areas of public policies that are less developed in the current Association Agreement, such as environmental protection, digitalization and cooperation with the European Union in the field of security", said Nicu Popescu.

The foreign minister promised that a bilateral agreement will be signed shortly with Latvia for the social protection of Moldovan citizens living in that country, as well as that a dialogue on the recognition of Moldovan driving licenses in Latvia will be initiated.
