The Delegation of the Republic of Moldova to the Joint Control Commission (JCC) condemned the presence of paramilitary bodies that do not form part of the joint peacekeeping forces in the Security Zone and their abusive actions that resulted in the death of a man. The reaction comes after a fisherman drowned in the Nistru not far from Răscăieți village of Ștefan Vodă district, IPN reports.

In the May 13 meeting of the JCC, Moldova’s Delegation raised the problem from the angle of the basic activities of the peacekeeping operation on the Nistru.

“The representatives of Tiraspol to the JJC opposed discussing the issue and taking an objective attitude to it, while the delegation of Chisinau called on the delegation of the Russian Federation, the reprehensives of Ukraine and the OSCE Mission to the Joint Control Commission to contribute to the process of withdrawing the “boarder guard” posts that were set up illegally in the Security Zone and to ensure the observance of the provisions of the Agreements of 1992 and 1998,” says the JCC’s press release.

According to the General Police Inspectorate, two villagers were fishing from a boat on the river at a distance of about 20 meters from the left bank of the Nistru. At a certain moment, unknown persons from the left side of the Nistru dressed in military uniforms asked the two to approach the bank. The men ignored the requests and tried to reach the right bank by swimming. One of the men aged 43 got to the right bank and saw his 47-year-old fellow villager lying on the left bank, with the persons in uniforms staying around him. The Bureau for Reintegration Policies said the meditators and observers to the 5+2 format talks were informed about the May 11 Security Zone incident that resulted in the death of the man.
