Moldovans used 48 mln tones of tap water in 2005

In 2005, the supplies of water delivered to Moldovan consumers amounted to 67 mln cubic meters, by 3.6 mln c.m. more compared to the previous year, according to data of the National Bureau of Statistics. From the total amount of tap water, the population received 47.9 mln c.m., by 3.8 mln more than in 2004. Urban inhabitants were supplied with 92.2% of running water. According to the same data, the loss and consumption of unregistered water totaled to 42.7 mln c.m., i.e. 37.8% of the total amount of delivered water, similar situation compared with the previous years. In 2005 the average domestic use of water resources, in cities and towns, was of 82 liters/inhabitant, compared 74.1 in 2004. The debts of the population for the running water and sewerage services has constituted MDL 174.9 mln and registered an increase by 12.4% in comparison with the previous year. Data from the National Center for Preventive Medicine show that 17.1 % of tap water samples failed hygiene-related tests, and 12.1% of them are not in line with microbiological standards. The Republic of Moldova had at the end of 2005 a supply network of tap water of 6.7 thousand km, including the length of the aqueducts of 1.8 thousand km.
