During two weeks, the Moldovans will be urged to sign messages in support of the persons whose rights are violated by the authorities in four countries. The letters can be left at the Central Post Office and at the Chisinau Library “Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu” and can be also sent online to the address www.amnesty.md/maraton, IPN reports.
Amnesty International Moldova executive director Cristina Pereteatcu said the Letter Writing Marathon is held in Moldova for the third year in a row. This year the letters will be sent to the Governments of Turkey, Palestine, Nigeria and Mexico. The countries were selected based on an opinion poll carried out recently among members and activists of Amnesty International.
The goal of the marathon is to sensitize the people to cases of use of torture by the state bodies in different corners of the world. “We are glad that by this marathon we manage to create an atmosphere of human rights where more people in our country are infected with the feeling of international solidarity. It is a state of joy to see that the pen still has the power to save and change lives and to make the governments responsible,” said Cristina Pereteatcu.
IS “Posta Moldovei” strategy and marketing director Pavel Ianet said that this year the Post Office assumes again responsibility for delivering letters to the authorities of the four countries. According to him, over 3,000 letters were collected within the marathon last year.
The signatories of the messages consider that every person has the right to freedom and free expression and by this drive the people show that they are one step closer those who rights are not respected and are not indifferent to their problems.
The Letter Writing Marathon for human rights will take place between December 2 and December 16.
