Moldovans prefer to deposit money in banks in lei

The new term deposits in October came to 3.206,7 billion lei, 11.7% up compared to September. Deposits attracted in national currency constituted 68.2% and amounted to 2.185,8 billion lei, an increase of 23.3% compared to September. Deposits attracted in foreign currency totaled 1.020,9 million lei, 7.1 percent down compared to the previous month, IPN reports.

According to the National Bank of Moldova, the average nominal rate on new deposits attracted in national currency decreased by 0.21 percentage points compared to the previous month to 2.97%. The average nominal rate on deposits in foreign currency decreased by 0.06 percentage points to 1.5%.

As for the terms, the deposits with terms of 6 to 12 months represented 43% of the total, while the deposits with terms of 2 to 5 years - 23.2%.

Individuals’ deposits amounted to 2.173,6 billion lei last month, a 6.6% decrease compared to the previous month. The deposits with terms of 6 to 12 months constituted 39.7% of the total deposits of individuals, while the deposits with terms of 2 to 5 years - 20.9%.

The average rate on deposits attracted in national currency from individuals, compared to the previous month, increased by 0.07 percentage points to 3.32%. The average rate on deposits attracted in foreign currency decreased by 0.04 percentage points to 1.43%.

Legal entities’ deposits in national currency in October grew 2.5 times on September, while those in foreign currency decreased by 3.3%. Legal entities’ deposits in national currency came to 824.4 million lei, while those in foreign currency – to 203.3 million lei.

The average rate on deposits attracted in national currency from legal entities decreased by 0.49 percentage points to 2.39%. The average rate on deposits attracted in foreign currency decreased by 0.14 percentage points to 1.79%.
