More than 3,200 officers were involved in responding to the hoax bomb threats that have surged considerably in recent months. General Police Inspectorate chief Viorel Cernăuțeanu says that over 880 sites have been targeted in the false threats since the beginning of the year.
According to the General Police Inspectorate, the damage caused by the false threats is estimated at more than 2.2 million lei, not to mention the overwork done by the police officers.
Whereas in the first six months of the year there were 24 bomb threats made, in July and August their number surged to 124.
Cernăuțeanu said that all the threats made via calls to the emergency service 112 were tracked down and the perpetrators identified. Locating threats made by email is more complicated, however, he added.
Meanwhile, there has been a decrease in juvenile delinquency (-21%) as well as in traffic accidents resulting in deaths and serious injuries. Drug crimes, sex crimes and patrimonial crimes also decreased.
Cernăuțeanu added that, with the inflow of Ukrainian refugees, a number of crime bosses have been detained in Moldova to be extradited back to Ukraine.
