Moldovan police also intimidates members Eugen Tomac's staff

The Chisinau police has held up two members of the electoral staff of the candidate to a seat in Romania's Parliament, Eugen Tomac. The statement was made right by the candidate of the Democratic-Liberal Party (PD-L) from Romania, Thursday, at a news conference in the quarters of Info-Prim Neo agency. According to Romanian lawyer Mihai Nicolae, the Rascani sector police informed him that the Romanian citizen Valentin Raducanu had been detained to establish his identity. The barrister sees a violation of the international norms in the move of the Chisinau police, since he believes Raducanu's identity could have easily been confirmed by border guards. Together with the Romanian citizen, the police arrested another member of Tomac's staff, Eduard Burlacu, a Moldovan citizen. The lawyer says the two did not carry out any illegal activities while being held up. The car with Bucharest number plates was halted aleatorily. The same day at a news conference, the candidate of Social-Democratic Party, Tudor Pantiru, accused the Moldovan law-enforcing bodies of intimidations in running his electoral campaign. The press unit of the Interior Ministry was not available to make comments immediately. Talking about the objectives he wants fulfilled, in case of being elected in the Deputies Chamber, Eugen Tomac has first mentioned granting Romanian citizenship to all the Basarabians, as his electoral slogan also refers to this goal. “Unfreezing the process of getting Romanian citizenship and legally regulating the status of Romanians abroad. We want all the Romanian speakers abroad be able to come to the country whenever they want, to have as many as possible social, educational and cultural assistance,” the candidate says. Eugen Tomac rejects his opponents' accusations, according to which, he would enjoy an image transfer on the part of Romanian president Traian Basescu. “The president makes no campaign for me,” Basescu's advisor said. Eugen Tomac suspended his exercise of the job during the electoral race. He has said he knows nothing about the support on the part of what Pantiru's staff called 'Communist media.' Last week the Moldovan Foreign Ministry expressed his concern in a note sent to the Bucharest Foreign Ministry about the fact that the Romanian authorities did not coordinate the actions connected to the electoral campaign over the Prut with the Moldovan authorities.
