In May, the Moldovan leu depreciated by an average of 2.7% against the US dollar, to USD 18.9244 / MDL, compared to USD 18.4274 / MDL in April.

The data of the National Bank of Moldova show that in May the coverage of the net demand for foreign currency by economic operators through the net supply of foreign currency from individuals was 106.2%, compared to 67.6% in April.

Compared to the previous month, the net supply of foreign currency from individuals increased by $82.3 million, and the net demand for foreign currency by economic operators increased to a lesser extent, by $ 9 million.

The foreign exchange market operated in terms of net demand for foreign currency in the first twenty days of the month, which was moderated by the NBM through interventions selling $ 36 million. In the last ten says, the situation was reversed, registering a foreign exchange surplus, which was partially purchased by the NBM through interventions of 17.5 million dollars.

“Taking into account inflationary expectations and the evolution of the market as a result of the increase in energy tariffs, which is manifested internationally and in the Republic of Moldova, respectively, as well as the geopolitical situation, the NBM carefully monitors developments and will intervene through its monetary policy to create adequate conditions on the monetary, lending and foreign exchange market”, the NBM said in a press release.
