A Moldovan who smuggled gold and silver jewelry from Turkey was sentenced to four years in jail and fined over 170,000 lei. The sentence can be appealed to a higher court, IPN reports.
The Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime and Special Cases said that two Moldovans in 2018 smuggled over 4 kg of gold jewelry and more than 2 kg of silver jewelry.
The recently convicted man does not have a criminal record and this helped him get a milder sentence. Smuggling carries a penalty of at most 10 years behind bars.
The case against the second smuggler is pending in court.
The jewelry was classed as corpus delicti and attached as evidence to the case started against the second defendant.
