After the Moldovan tennis players achieved good results at the Davis Cup, the female tennis players also intend to perform well at the Federations Cup. On May 8-11, Moldova will host the matches of the Europe/Africa zone third group that will involve 15 women’s teams, IPN reports.

“Our objective is to qualify for the second group. We also want to organize the first women’s tennis competition in the best way possible. It is an exam both for the women and for the federation,” Marina Tauber, president of the Moldovan Tennis Federation, told a news conference.

“Tennis is now developing and is ahead of all the sports. We are proud of the successes of our athletes,” said acting Minister of Youth and Sport Octavian Ticu.

Moldova will find out its opponents on May 7. Only two of the 15 participants will qualify for the second group. The matches will take place at the Terra Ten sports complex in Ciocana. Entrance is free of charge.

“We have a strong, well-prepared team, but a lot depends on the draw. We hope to avoid the teams of Madagascar and Liechtenstein,” said Moldova captain Olga Cosic.

Moldova will be represented at the Fed Cup by Anastasia Vdovenco, Gabriela Porubin, Iulia Helbet, Melisa Martinov and Daniela Ciobanu.

At the start of April, the men’s national squad of Moldova for the first time went through to the final of the Davis Cup Europe/Africa zone second group.
