The Republic of Moldova has won four medals for the first time since contending at the Olympic Games with a separate delegation, twice as many as in 1996 and 2000. The National Olympic and Sports Committee said the silver medal awarded to Anastasia Nichita is the first after a 24-year hiatus, IPN reports.

For the first time, the judokas also climbed on to the winner’s rostrum, winning two bronze medals, through Denis Vieru and Adil Osmanov. Canoeist Sergei Tarnovschi occupied the third spot at the Olympics for the second time, proving his worth.

Very close to a bronze medal was weightlifter Marin Robu, who was affected by controversial refereeing decisions. It is hoped that justice will be done to Marin Robu following the appeal.

Moldova ranked 72nd out of 206 countries with the four medals.

Paris hosted the Olympics after a 100-year pause and broke the record for sold tickets - 9.4 million.

The next edition of the Summer Olympics will take place in 2028 in Los Angeles.
