The Moldovan wrestlers have not yet won medals at the European Wrestling Championships that opened in Tbilisi on March 20. Moldova’s last representative at the competition Petru Ianulov will compete in the 84kg class freestyle wrestling on March 22, IPN reports.
Alexandru Burca ranked 11th after he was eliminated by Armenia’s Grigor Grigoryan in quarterfinals, in the 74kg class.
Alexandru Romanov finished ninth in the 120kg category. After he was beaten by Alen Zasiev from Ukraine in the preliminary round, he had the chance to re-qualify, but was defeated by German wrestler Nick Matuhin.
In the women’s tournament, Mariana Esanu (55kg class) took the seventh position. In quarterfinals, she was eliminated by Sofia Magdalena Mattsson from Sweden, who afterward became continental champion. In the re-qualifying round, Mariana lost to Romania’s Ana Maria Paval.
Svetlana Saenko (72kg class), who took part in the 2012 London Olympics, will compete on March 22. Moldovan Greco-roman-style wrestlers Victor Ciobanu (55kg), Donior Islamov (60kg), Ion Luchita (66kg), and Andrian Mocanu (84kg) will fight the comings days.
Mihai Sava and Alexandru Chirtoaca achieved the best results at the European Wrestling Championships this year. They both ranked fifth.
