Moldova wins double victory in eighth round of World Chess Olympiad

The national teams of Moldova scored victories in the eighth round of the World Chess Olympiad held in Baku. The men’s team beat the squad of Paraguay 3.5 – 0.5, making it the fifth victory so far, while the women’s team defeated the Albanian team 4 – 0, IPN reports.

The men’s team now ranks 22nd out of 180 teams. The rankings are topped by the teams of the United States, India and Ukraine. After eight rounds played, the women’s team takes the 33rd position among 140 participating states with five victories. The teams of China and the U.S. are the favorites of the women’s tournament.

Grand master Viorel Bologan drew, while grand masters Viorel Iordachescu, Dmitrii Svetushkin and Elena Partacand masters Sergey Vedmediuc, Diana Baciu, Olga Hancu and Paula-Alexandra Gatu had wins.

In the ninth round, the men chess players meet the team of Serbia, while the women play against the Latvian chess players.
