Moldova will profit from the early elections in Ukraine, if they will be held according to the scenario of the Ukrainian President Victor Iuscenco, political analyst Veaceslav Ionita told Info-Prim Neo.
According to him, Iuscenko’s policy with respect to Moldova and, in particular, the settlement of Transnistrian dispute is welcomed in Chisinau. The Ukrainian President is interested in solving the Transnistrian dispute, being the promoter of the idea to monitor the border, the expert says.
On the other hand, Premier Victor Ianukovici, Iuscenko’s main rival, is supported by certain regions, including the Odessa region, which is the most interested in Transnistria’s status quo. As Ionita says, after Ianukovici came to power, Moldova-Ukraine relations saw a certain destabilisation.
At the same time, the analyst asserts that even if Ianukovici will win the elections, the current policies of Ukraine will be continued anyhow, taking into account western pressures, yet this process will take more time.
Victor Iuscenko announced on Monday, April 2, the dissolution of the Supreme Rada (the Ukrainian legislature) and set the date for early elections for May 27. Iuscenko explained his decision by “by the strict necessity to save the state's sovereignty and territorial integrity”.
On the other hand, part of legislators in the Supreme Rada announced that they will sue the decree of the Ukrainian President at the Constitutional Court.
The regular parliamentary elections in Ukraine took place in late March 2006.
