Maia Sandu’s call for the Moldovans with Romanian and European citizenship to vote in the June 9 election of MEPs has been heard. Queues were observed at polling stations established in Moldovan localities, and the Permanent Electoral Authority in Bucharest reported that the voters in our country are the most active ones in the Romanian diaspora, IPN reports.
The voters from the Republic of Moldova constituted about 25% of the total number of 209,000 Romanian voters abroad. Over 56,700 Moldovans with Romanian citizenship voted at the 52 polling stations opened by Romania in our country.
The figure illustrates a record turnout of Moldovans in the European Parliament elections, compared to the figures five years ago. By 04:00 p.m. already, the number of those who went to the polls exceeded the total number recorded in the 2019 European Parliament elections, when about 38,000 Romanians in the Republic of Moldova voted. The will of the voters is to have representatives of the Republic of Moldova in the legislature in Brussels, who will support the country’s European path.
It should be noted that the European Parliament is the only European Union that is directly elected by the citizens, being made up of 720 MEPs who represent the 450 million citizens of the European community. Romania will have 33 representatives in the European Parliament. According to preliminary data, the PSD-PNL Alliance will keep its majority in the country delegation.
At the European level, the prediction that the strongest political force in the European Parliament will be an alliance of center-right parties is confirmed. The European People’s Party (EPP) could win 176 seats in the European Parliament - almost as many as after the 2019 elections, the German public media company ARD announced on Sunday, June 9, quoting unofficial preliminary results and exit polls after the closure of polls.
