The Republic of Moldova will join the EU’s Customs program that supports the essential cooperation between customs authorities. The legislative body ratified the relevant agreement with the EU. According to the authorities, the ratification of the agreement will ensure enhanced interaction and coordination of activities between the customs authorities of the Republic of Moldova and the EU as part of the common efforts to secure borders and to facilitate commercial exchanges, IPN reports.

“The Customs program aims to ensure cooperation with the customs authorities of the EU member states and the economic security of the parties, simultaneously facilitating the growth of international trade through the achievement of a number of objectives,” Ion Gumene, secretary of state of the Ministry of Finance, stated in Parliament.

Among the cooperation actions are the strengthening of administrative capacities and capacities in the IT sector, development and operation of European electronic systems, implementation of innovations in the field of customs policy. The first part of the equipment was already delivered. This will ensure connection between the national and European tax systems.

Ion Gumene noted that for 2021-2027, the program has a budget of €950 million for all the countries taking part in the program. Moldova’s contribution starting with 2024 will be €20,000 yearly.

“The connection to the New Computerized Transit System as from 2023 is one example of the way in which the Republic of Moldova will benefit. This costs €250,000. It is an immediate benefit following the signing of this agreement,” stated the functionary.

The agreement between the Republic of Moldova and the European Union on Moldova’s participation in the EU’s Customs program for cooperation in the customs sector was signed in Brussels on February 7, 2023.
