The European Commission and the Government of Moldova signed an agreement on Moldova’s accession to the EU4Health prorgram. Moldova will this way gain access to EU funding for health. This will help the health system of Moldova to better respond to immediate needs and to contribute to post-COVID-19 recovery in the long run, IPN reports.

The agreement will be applied retroactively as from January 1, 2023. The Republic of Moldova can benefit from financing to the same extent to which entities of EU member states or other associate states can. The health authorities will be able to take part in joint activities intended for health authorities in specific areas, such as mental health, the European data on health, global health, noncommunicable diseases and the EU Network of Comprehensive Cancer Centers.

The players from the public or private health sector will be able to apply for financing to support such actions as combating of crossborder health threats, prevention of chronic respiratory diseases, improvement of mental health of vulnerable groups, including displaced persons, and improvement of health systems and services.

Another two signed agreements strengthen the Republic of Moldova’s participation in the EU’s Customs and Fiscalis programs. The customs and fiscal authorities of the Republic of Moldova will be able to take part in joint activities and to benefit from a wide range of training services. Al these new areas of cooperation are of special importance now that Moldova obtained the EU candidate status.

The agreements were signed on the sidelines of the seventh meeting of the EU - Moldova Association Council that was held in Brussels on February 7.
