Eight Moldovan athletes are preparing for the second Youth Olympic Games that will take place in China’s Nanjing on August 16-28, IPN reports.

These are: Sergey Tarnovschi (canoeing), Tatiana Doncila (women’s wrestling), Nicoleta Dulgheru (gymnastics), Dumitru Ceacusta (freestyle wrestling), Tatiana Perstniova and Alexei Stancov (both swimming), Stefan Mura and Polina Ciui (both athletics).

The squad’s manager Cristina Vasilianov said more athletes can yet form part of the Olympic team. “The qualifying competitions are not yet over. Several more athletes are competing for a ticket,” she told a news conference.

“It is a very important event that represents a bridge for passing from juniors to seniors. I hope we will win medals, as in the first Youth Olympics,” said the president of the National Olympic Committee Nicolae Juravschi.

China’s Ambassador to Moldova Tong Mingtao said that his country is making effort to stage the competition at the highest level possible. “All the participants will appreciate the efforts made by the Government of China. I wish the Moldovan athletes good luck,” he stated.

The competition will involve athletes aged between 15 and 18.
