Moldova is willing to start negotiations on ending roaming charges with Turkey and finalize as soon as feasible the ratification proceedings for the mutual recognition of driving licenses. This was stated by Moldova’s foreign minister Nicu Popescu during a meeting in Chisinau with his Turkish counterpart Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu.

During the meeting, Nicu Popescu put an emphasis on economic diplomacy and noted that Turkey continues to be a key trade partner for Moldova, being the fourth leading destination for products manufactured in Moldova. In this context, the officials agreed on the need to organize in the near future a new meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation.

During the plenary meeting, the two delegations also examined the political and security situation in the region, including the Transnistrian conflict settlement process, as well as issues related to interaction and mutual support on regional platforms and initiatives, such as the South-East European Cooperation Process (SEECP) and the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC), but also cooperation within international organizations.

Nicu Popescu expressed the Moldovan Government’s gratitude for the valuable financial and technical assistance offered by Turkey through its Cooperation and Coordination Agency TIKA in such areas as education, health care, environment protection, as well as for the help provided by the Turkish people during the coronavirus pandemic.

Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu invited Nicu Popescu to mark the 30th anniversary of bilateral relations in 2022 with a visit to Turkey, which the latter accepted.
