Moldova scores first victories at World Chess Olympiad

The national men’s chess team of Moldova beat the team of South Korea 3.5-0.5 in the first round of the World Chess Olympiad that is held in Georgia’s Batumi, IPN reports.

The Moldovan squad includes grand masters Viorel Bologan, Viorel Iordăchescu, Dmitrii Svetushkin, Vladimir Hamitsevich and master Nikita Morozov. In the second round, Moldova meets Macedonia.

The national women’s team that consists of grand masters Svetlana Petrenko, Elena Pîrțac and masters Diana Baciu, Olga Hâncu and Paula-Alexandra Gîtu won a clearer victory. Moldova defeated Namibia 4-0 and in the second round plays against Canada.

The 43rd World Chess Olympiad involves 184 men’s teams and 151 women’s teams.
