Moldova, poor among the rich, rich among the poor

In the competition of the richest countries, Moldova ranked 97th in 2023, according to International Monetary Fund data published by Global Finance, IPN reports.

According to statistics, Moldova’s GDP at purchasing power parity (PPP) per capita is $17,902, which placed it on the 97th spot at global level. In the table, Moldova ranks below Romania, which is the 53rd with $43,179 per capita, but above Ukraine, with 110th place and $15,464 per capita.

Russia is ranked 60th ($38,292), Latvia - 55th ($41,730), Poland - 43rd ($49,060), Lithuania - 41st ($50,600).

Luxembourg is recognized as the richest country in the world with an annual GDP of $143,173 per capita. Among the top three are the Macao region of China ($134,141) and Ireland ($133,895). Among the European countries, Luxembourg is followed by San-Marino, Norway, Switzerland, Andorra, Denmark, Iceland, and other countries.

Somewhere in between is the United States with an annual GDP of $84,624 per capita.

According to the IMF, the world’s poorest countries have an average GDP-PPP per capita of less than $1,500, while the richest 10 have $110,000 per capita.

Before Moldova, there are Slovenia (38th), Lithuania (41st), the Czech Republic and Poland (42nd and 43rd, respectively), and also Croatia, Hungary, Estonia, Slovakia, Romania, Latvia, Russia, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Serbia, Belarus, Georgia, Armenia, Albania, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan. Further lower in the rankings, among the post-Soviet countries, are only Ukraine (110th), Uzbekistan (124th), Kyrgyzstan (143rd) and Tajikistan (148th).

At the bottom of the rankings there are such countries as Niger, Mozambique, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Central African Republic, Burundi, Sudan, and also a number of countries such as Afghanistan, which did not submit relevant data.
