Even if the minimum official salary in Moldova has grown significantly since 2018, in the first quarter of this year Moldova paid the lowest minimum salary in the economy in Europe. This was €205, up from €132 in 2018. For comparison, the minimum salary in Bulgaria was €399, in Romania – €606, in Germany - €1,987, said economic expert of the Institute for Development and Social Initiatives “Viitorul” Veaceslav Ioniță.

The economist made optimistic forecasts. According to him, over the next five years the discrepancy between Moldova and Bulgaria – an EU country with the lowest minimum salary – will narrow from twofold to 1.5 times. “The Republic of Moldova, being a very poor country, can and should increase the minimum salary in a more accelerated way so that we reach a minimum that is more or less acceptable in the EU,” stated the economist.

Veaceslav Ioniță estimated that the average official salary in 2023 will rise to 12,450 lei, up almost 2,000 lei on 2022.
