Moldova became officially party to the Arms Trade Treaty and is to fulfill its international obligations to prevent the illicit trade in arms. Moldova signed this document on September 10, 2013 and ratified it on May 28, 2015. Prime Minister Valeriu Strelet, accompanied by Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Natalia Gherman, deposited the instrument of ratification of the Arms Trade Treaty in an event held on the sidelines of the high-level segment of the UN General Assembly, IPN reports.
According to the Government’s press service, the ratification by Moldova of this treaty is a commitment to step up the national efforts to build the arms control capacity, contributing thus to ensuring sustainable peace and security at regional and global levels. Moldova is to also adjust its national legislation on the control of the export and import of strategic goods and will benefit from international assistance in this regard.
The Arms Trade Treaty is a multilateral treaty that regulates the international trade in conventional weapons for the purpose of contributing to international and regional peace, reducing human suffering, and promoting co-operation, transparency and responsible action by and among states. It entered into force in December 2014.
