Moldova needs a truly public radio and TV service, which would be financially and editorially independent, the Chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Rene van der Linden declared while delivering a speech from the central tribune of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova on Thursday, July 27. Referring to the freedom of media, the official declared that the number of radio and TV stations is not as important as their independence and pluralism. “It is not sufficient that all political forces having audiovisual institutions criticize each other. Democracy needs independent stations which provide with impartial and correct information”, the Chairman of PACE mentioned. The European official also declared that the democratic process and institutions of Moldova need more important reforms. It is necessary that the adopted and implemented legislation proves that the MPs have the necessary immunity in order to perform their duties. Van der Linden referred in this context to the situation of the leader of “Moldova Noastra” Alliance, Serafim Urecheanu “which was excluded from the composition of Moldova’s delegation to PACE” and who should not be vulnerable comparing with the rest of MPs. The Chairman of PACE said that he acknowledged with the fact that some MPs are reluctant towards regional and local authorities, though centralization and weakening local administration is never good for social stability. As well, the official referred to the necessity of reforming the judicial system. According to van der Linden, foreign companies will not be willing to invest in Moldova as long as clear rules are missing. He also mentioned the necessity of ensuring freedom of the Bar. The official drew attention towards the need of respecting personal dignity in prisons, reminding that CoE criticized the inmates’ condition. Speaker Marian Lupu declared that over the last 6 months the Parliament approved an array of laws which provide for reforming the judicial system, the prosecution office, for ensuring freedom of speech etc. The speaker reiterated the commitment of the Legislative to promote reforms in the most important fields. Rene van der Linde is paying an official visit to the Republic of Moldova during July 26-28. He met with the leadership of the country, leaders of the parliamentary factions and other officials.
