It is 25 years since Moldova proclaimed its sovereignty, but there are yet many factors that undermine the country’s sovereignty, said experts who took part in the talk show “Fabrika” on Publika TV channel in the evening of June 23, IPN reports.

Media analyst Cristian Tabara said there are many factors showing that Moldova’s sovereignty is not complete. “When there is a separatist region like Transnistria, we cannot speak about full sovereignty. Until some of the politicians, with major ambitions, obey Moscow and do not make a secret of this, the state’s sovereignty is impinged. The sovereignty is also impinged by the statements of the new mayor of Balti, who said that he will do what he wants there. Those from the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia should realize that Moldova is a sovereign state and they do not have the right to hold referendums on the geopolitical orientation and that the status of autonomous unit was offered to them not because they wanted this, but because the entire Moldovan people accepted this,” he stated.

Sergiu Musteata, dean of the Faculty of History of the Teacher Training University “Ion Creanga”, said that we cannot speak about Moldova’s full sovereignty when the country does not have control over its whole territory. “During 25 years, Moldova hasn’t controlled a part of its territory. Furthermore, foreign military troops were deployed here. Can we speak about sovereignty in such conditions?” he asked.

Writer Valeriu Matei said the sovereignty of the state depends also on the people’s consciousness. “The sovereignty is enshrined in the Constitution. Its interpretation also depends on the mentality. We must not forget that the state that recognized our country’s sovereignty the first was Romania, at a time when the Soviet empire still existed,” he stated.
