The Republic of Moldova is mainly in the sphere of influence of the Russian Federation and not only in the narrow meaning of the word, but also in the broad meaning. Even if polls show that Russia invested nothing in Moldova, a large part of the population supports the Customs Union and pleads for closer relations with the Russian Federation and the Eurasian Union, politologist Denis Zacon stated in the talk show “People’s Council” on 10TV channel, IPN reports.

The politologist said he see a threat with an eventual war by Russia in the Russian State Duma’s statement of July 7, which says that the Moldovan and Ukrainian authorities contribute to the creation of threats to the stability of the Transnistrian region and to the welfare and security of the inhabitants of Transnistria. “I think such type of threats should not exist in the 21th century when there is the UN Charter and an international law system. This blackmailing by Russia with a war seems to be a last weapon that this holds,” stated Denis Zacon.

According to him, since the Transnistrian conflict appeared Russia has actively issued Russian passport to Transnistrians. Now there are over 200,000 Russian citizens in Transnistria. “Thus, by the large number of citizens Russia could legalize an eventual military campaign in the Transnistrian region,” stated Denis Zacon.
