The visit by Moldova’s President Maia Sandu to Poland left a nice impression. After many years, it was possible to resume the upper-level dialogue between the two states that are situated in the same region. Even if they do not have a common border, they can be considered neighing states. The Heads of the two states had a direct conversation and discussed a number of topical subjects. The future of the Central and Western Europe is related to the integration into the Western institutions, but also to the bilateral cooperation between states, Poland’s Ambassador to the Republic of Moldova Bartłomiej Zdaniuk stated for IPN when asked to comment on Maia Sandu’s visit to Poland.

“The Republic of Moldova is at the border with the EU, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, very close to us, the Poles, and it is normal that the future of the Republic of Moldova, its presence in different formats of cooperation is special. All the interlocutors of Missis Maia Sandu reaffirmed Poland’s unconditional support for the Republic of Moldova on the road of reforms aimed at the establishment of a functional state that will ensure the wellbeing of its citizens. The visit was very successful and the contacts with the administration of the state were restored. We hope that in the future, we will fructify the effort of this visit into a number of projects we hope to implement in the immediate period,” stated Bartłomiej Zdaniuk.

Asked what Chisinau should do for the development experience of Poland to be successfully undertaken, the ambassador said that first of all there should be wish to modernize the country, to make it compatible with the international standards. “I think this is not difficult. Only the wishes of the people of the Republic of Moldova should be taken into account. The citizens say it clearly that they want to live in a country with prospects and with appropriate living conditions, not necessarily abroad. The people should be listened to and everyone repeats this, regardless of the political beliefs and spoken language. The first effort that should be made is to modernize the country, to make it attractive to the citizens of the Republic of Moldova. A critical mass of people is needed in Chisinau, in the Republic of Moldova, who would want changes in the country. We, the development partners, can offer our experience, our experts. But if there is not wish to make real, not only decorative changes, it’s useless to speak about cooperation. There should be wish and, as far as I saw, this wish was already expressed by the vote of the people in the Republic of Moldova. Surely, the sovereign people of the Republic of Moldova should take a decision as to the direction they want to follow the next years,” stated Bartłomiej Zdaniuk.

Asked how the Republic of Moldova can attract the interest for Poland, the ambassador said for Poland, it is important to have a stable and prosperous neighborhood. “The Republic of Moldova has a direct impact on our stability, prosperity and attractiveness. We do not want countries with different challenges, problems to be there in our neighborhood. We want each country in the region to be stable, predictable, attractive and only then we will be able to contribute to increasing stability in the region and this stability leads to the attractiveness of our countries. The Republic of Moldova is an important element of regional security and prosperity,” concluded Bartłomiej Zdaniuk.

President Maia Sandu on June 21 paid her first official visit as President to Poland, at the invitation of her Polish counterpart Andrzej Duda.
