The Republic of Moldova experiences a shortage of over 5,000 nurses owing to the migration and ageing of medical personnel. About 17% of the nurses and midwives are of retirement age, but continue to work as their services are in demand with medical institutions and the population. The figures were presented by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection on the occasion of the World Health Day that is celebrated on April 7, IPN reports.

Over 23,000 nurses work in Moldova at present. This is almost two thirds of the national health workforce. These nurses make a considerable contribution toward the provision of medical assistance to the population.

In 2020, we celebrate the world’s 22 million nurses and 2 million midwives who make up half of the global health workforce.

The launch in 2020 of the WHO’s first world report on medical assistance is an important global event. The report will provide a global picture of the health workforce and will support evidence-based planning based so as to optimize this workforce’s contribution to improving the health and welfare for everyone
