The Republic of Moldova observes the 31st anniversary of the adoption of the state’s Sovereignty Declaration. The document was adopted by the members of the Supreme Soviet of the Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic of the 12th legislature on June 23, 1990, IPN reports.

The adoption of the Sovereignty Declaration is considered the first important victory of the democratic forces in the national renaissance and liberation struggle. The Declaration stipulates that the laws of the Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic are above the laws of the Soviet Union. It institutes the nationally and specifies the sovereign right to maintain diplomatic relations with all the countries.

The Sovereignty Declaration lays at the basis of the Constitution that continues to be the Supreme Law of the Republic of Moldova. It provides that the Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic obeys the statutes of the UN and adheres to the principles of this organization, is a demilitarized zone and actively promotes the strengthening of peace and security. It is directly engaged in the cooperation and security processes and in the European bodies.

Estonia was the first former Soviet republic that declared its sovereignty in November 1988, being followed by Lithuania, in April 1989 and Latvia, in July 1989. Meanwhile, Lithuania declared its independence on March 11, 1990. The Sovereignty Declaration of the Supreme Soviet of the Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic was preceded by that of Georgia, of May 26, 1990, and that of Russia, of June 12, 1990.

In connection with the activities held to celebrate the Sovereignty Day, the Parliament’s Museum as from today will house a copy of the Sovereignty Declaration of the Republic of Moldova alongside the country’s Declaration of Independence. In the morning, Parliament Speaker Zinaida Grechanyi congratulated all the citizens on this occasion and wished them courage and determination for further maintaining and defending the country’s sovereignty, for protecting the values of the national heritage and for keeping and passing on ancestors’ values and traditions.
