The Republic of Moldova needs the funds that are collected through the Support Platform to cope with the experienced energy and economic crises, said representatives of civil society from Chisinau and Bucharest. According to them, the financial commitments announced by the European states and the international organizations are a sign of encouragement for the Gavrilița Government and an attempt to keep the Republic of Moldova in the pro-European geopolitical sphere in the context of the war in Ukraine, IPN reports.
In the Ministerial Conference of the Moldova Support Platform organized by France, Germany and Romania in Bucharest, Moldova obtained €600 million in financing. Of the total sum announced, €77 million is provided by Germany in grant funding.
“We face the consequences of the pandemic crisis that hit the country’s citizen and the economy. We experience the energy crisis that has a significant impact on the welfare of the people and, without state support, while the state without the support of the Western donors, we will be unable to cope. Inflation seriously hit the citizens’ purchasing power and we now expect the possible developments in winter with concern. That’s why the announced financial resources will help us to cope with the faced problems,” expert of the Institute for Development and Social Initiatives “Viitorul” Veaceslav Berbeca stated in the program “Emphasis on Today” on TVR Moldova channel.
For his part, political commentator Ion Terguță said the Republic of Moldova cannot endlessly bank on foreign funds and the Government should come up with concrete economic recovery initiatives.
“The Republic of Moldova does not produce anything and is unable to make its own money. A sum €600 million was announced in Berlin and another €600 was announced now. Probably the same sum will be announced in Paris. It comes to about €2 billion in grants and loans. But I want to see what our Government does. I would like to see more relaxation fiscal policies for businesses, concrete projects for developing the small businesses. A year has passed and the Government should have taken concrete steps in this regard. The Republic of Moldova, no matter how much financial support it gets from outside, cannot permanently beg. We must learn to live on our funds,” stated Ion Terguță.
The president of the Experts for Security and Global Affairs Association based in Bucharest Angela Gramadă said the financial support provided by the international community to the Republic of Moldova has a geopolitical component in the context of the regional security crisis.
“All the initiatives coming from outside the country are valuable and do not represent only a message of encouragement for the Republic of Moldova, meaning an inert Government is financed, but are rather a commitment of the European Union not to detach itself too much from the problems faced by the region. The EU understands that the Republic of Moldova can become an instrument in the hands of particular foreign players that could use it to obtain foreign policy and security advantages in the region,” stated Angela Gramadă.
The first Ministerial Conference of the Moldova Support Platform was held in Brussels in April and over €600 million in assistance for Moldova was announced then.
