The Republic of Moldova is among the top 10 global producers and exporters of walnuts, and the development of this sector, according to the authorities, remains a priority. At the National Conference of Walnut Growers, President Maia Sandu stressed the importance of the walnut industry for the country's economy and announced new investments to increase production, modernization and expansion of plantations, IPN reports.
The event brought together specialists in the field, producers and exporters, who discussed good practices, international experience and the impact of climate change on walnut trees.
Currently, Moldova exports walnuts to Germany, France and Romania, with orchards covering an area of over 23,000 hectares.
According to the authorities, the state in 2023 invested 26 million lei in expanding orchards and improving horticultural infrastructure. At the same time, by 2030 it is planned to replant 3,900 hectares with productive varieties, modernize processing and ensure access to foreign markets. These measures will contribute to the creation of new jobs and augmentation of export earnings, strengthening Moldova's position on the international walnut market.
