A slight increase in the number of registrations of “.md” top-level domain names is expected this year. Thus, an adjustment by reducing the charge for the given service would be appropriate, the administrator of the state-run IT solutions company “MoldData” Dorian Bodiu has told IPN.

The charge for registering “.md” top-level domain names contains mainly the annual costs for running this service, including basic and reserve broadband Internet access by dedicated channels for maintaining and permanently updating the local equipment and the reserve equipment stored outside. It also includes costs for paying dues to international institutions and salaries to the personnel maintaining this service.

According to Dorian Bodiu, as the annual registrations are relatively constant, the charge for this service remains the same. The country code “.md” forms part of the category of the lowest number of registrations (F), which cannot be compared with the generic registrations “.com”, “.org” or of top-level domain names in the neighboring countries such as “.com.ua”, “.ru”, “ro”, and “.hu”. However, the number of registrations is projected to increase slightly this year.

According to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the registrations of “.md” top-level domain names total about 24,000.
