The project of a historical district located in the capital city, between the streets Mitropolit Bănulescu-Bodoni and Pushkin, which will also include the paved portion on 31 August 1989 Street, was presented by the Ministry of Culture on Thursday. According to Minister Sergiu Prodan, the project responds to the solution identified on the platform of discussions on the redesigning of 31 August 1989 Street, which brought together representatives of the City Hall, civil society and the professional community, IPN reports.

The concept, whose author is architect Roland Rotar, starts from a unitary vision of this historic district, where there are several historic and heritage buildings of the country – the National History Museum, the National Museum of Art, the National Library and the National Palace. “We aim to turn this quarter into a distinct cultural area of a European capital – with public spaces where events can take place simultaneously, rehabilitated with materials that best fit the historical context,” Sergiu Prodan told a press conference.

The Ministry of Culture undertakes to lay out the state-owned spaces from that area, while the street itself will remain the responsibility of the municipality. In this connection, the minister called on the Chisinau City Hall to cooperate to create together a true pedestrian zone, for the benefit of citizens and tourists visiting the country.

Architect Roland Rotar proposes installing urban furniture made of natural materials, stone or granite. A horizontal greenhouse with greenery and also a square are to be bult next to the mural on 31 August Street. The entire space will be adapted for people with disabilities.

The Ministry of Culture commits itself to invest 35-40 million lei in the project.
