Mihai Godea: Political elites do not „betray voters”, they simply use them

Re-election of president Vladimir Voronin has negative and positive results as well, political analyst Mihai Godea declared for Info Prim Neo on the occasion of marking one year since this event. Referring to positive outcomes of electing Voronin as president, the analyst firstly notes avoiding a political crisis, which would absorb more time and public funds, Moldova doesn’t have much to waste. Secondly, the „political partnership” led to a better involvement of a part of the opposition in public affairs at national level, Godea considers. Regarding negative results, the vote of 4 April led to silencing the opposition’s voters, in this way destroying the moral basis of being the Opposition. It is difficult at the moment to imagine the true value and power of the opposition and, even more, its short and medium-term goals, the analyst mentioned. Asked to comment on the vote of 4 April 2005, whether it was a politic act that strengthened Moldovan society or which divided it into 2 camps, Godea pointed out that the society is rather diffused than divided. „It is very difficult to speak about the Moldovan society being separated into two camps. In recent history this phenomenon was never noticed. The society is rather diffused.” The analyst noted that the vote of 4 April led to frustrations and consternations, even among democratic electorate, which deepened the identity crisis. As long as Moldova deals with this crisis, and the national idea „appears in the morning, and disappears in the evening”, this diffused society will be politically and ideologically dominated. Referring to certain statements that the opposition parties which re-elected Vladimir Voronin „betrayed their electors”, the political analyst mentioned, „political elites do not betray the electors, they simply use them.” This category of citizens propels the elites. Politicians consider themselves to be responsible in front of the population, not in front of the electors, and important decisions are always taken „of state reasons” or according to „national interest”. The value of fundamental cynicism is implemented successfully in Moldova and not only. There are relevant examples in neighbor countries. On 6 March, one year was marked since last parliamentary elections and on 4 April one year since the Parliament elected Vladimir Voronin, president of Communist Party, as head of the state.
