The freshly elected chairman of the Chisinau Municipal Council Mihai Ghimpu pledges that the Councils will serve the interests of the citizens and will take into consideration the initiatives for the municipality put forward by the parties that entered CMC during the election campaign. Though not backed by the Communist councillors, Mihai Ghimpu said that he is ready to cooperate with them, if they are willing to, because the party that he represents has a liberal vision. Otherwise, he will collaborate only with the factions that formed the majority coalition. In this connection, he reiterated the majority coalition’s commitment to promote measures to protect the socially vulnerable strata while the relevant issues will be examined. The coalition plays a special part in solving the problems related to the housing sector, the running of the wastewater utility, creation of stable working conditions for the small and medium-sized businesses, illegal parking etc. Ghimpu was elected to the post after the Social-Democratic faction joined the majority coalition in the CMC. The given faction is composed of councilors of the Social Democracy Party and of the Social-Democrat Party. The coalition now includes the faction of the Our Moldova Alliance, the Liberal faction and the Social-Democratic faction. The faction of the Communist Party earlier said that it will be in full opposition to the current Chisinau administration. The faction of the Christian-Democrat People’s Party considers that it was excluded from the coalition as, although not in opposition, it was not invited to the talks over Social-Democrats’ accession. The disputes over the election of the CMC chair lasted for over four months.
