The Republic of Moldova is currently under magnifying glass in the European Union. The latest political developments in Chisinau have been followed in Brussels very attentively, Romanian MEP Corina Crețu stated, noting there is particular concern there about the political changes in Moldova.

“Effectively, the Republic of Moldova is under magnifying glass at present. In Luxemburg, at the meeting of the EU foreign affairs ministers, a point about the situation in the Republic of Moldova was added to the agenda. This means a preoccupation and concern. We cannot anticipate, but we saw that some discuss about the stopping of this financial assistance,” Corina Crețu was quoted by IPN as saying in the talk show “Emphasis on today” on TVR Moldova channel.

According to the MEP, the installation of the Sandu Government was a guarantee for Moldova’s pro-European road. “I think it is too early to speak about what the current Government does, but we hope that the reforms and the Europeanization of the Republic of Moldova will be continued,” said the official.

She also said that Romania is the most important supporter of the Republic of Moldova and, regardless of the political situation in Chisinau, it is the duty of the Romanian politicians to help the fellows from over the Prut.

The MEP noted that a lot of the money allocated by the EU is not used. “Over €80 million is available for the 2014-2020 Romania – Republic of Moldova crossborder cooperation program and slightly less than 10% of this money was spent. We cannot blame only the politicians from Chisinau of this. I think there was lack of coordination. During many years, we only said nice words, but it is more important to use the available instruments and money,” stated Corina Crețu.

The MEP noted that Moldova is covered by the program that refers to the Danube and manages, together with Austria, the skills development area and has access to money as part of this program, but this is also not used.
